On 18 November 2022, Amsab-ISG launched the exhibition ‘Embroidered Past, Imagined Future in Congo’ with works by Lucie Kamuswekera, a Congolese artist who narrates the turbulent history of her country through embroideries. The expo is an initiative of researchers from Ghent University and The Ohio State University.
'The moment I saw people die is the moment I started to embroider the history of Congo'
'Njo saa niliona batu banakufa, njo sasa nikashona histoire ya Congo'
'Le moment où j'ai vu des gens mourir est le moment où j'ai commencé à broder l'histoire du Congo'
Lucie Kamuswekera, Goma, 2021
Lucie Kamuswekera (°1944) is an artist and one of the few Congolese women of her generation who helps shape the collective memory of Congo through her art. She learned the embroidery technique during colonial times and uses it today to critique the Congolese colonial past, but also the more recent political history of the Congo Wars that shaped her own life.
The exhibition in Amsab-ISG presents a selection of her canvases, was financed by Global Minds (Vliruos) and was realized in collaboration with Gillian Mathys, Sarah Van Beurden, Sam Kniknie and Maarten Hendriks, researchers from Ghent University and Ohio State University. .
