Since 2009, the department has conducted research into spatial development scenarios for the University of Western Cape (UWC) in Cape Town (South Africa) at the request of the institution. UWC desires to further profile itself as a centre of excellence on the continent and thus seeks to double its student population and significantly expand its research facilities in the coming years. In line with its historical background as a socially engaged university, UWC also seeks to play a prominent role in the urban environment of Belville, which is the second economic node within the Cape Town Metropolitan Area. A number of students have completed master’s dissertations investigating the current infrastructure of UWC (both of its main campus and its diverse satellite campuses). Through dialogue with local stakeholders, the students formulated design proposals for its future spatial development. A workshop was organized at UWC on the topic in 2010. A publication is planned for 2016.
